Paul Hayward

Conductor and Composer

Conductor and choral director

Paul holds the Licentiateship of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in choral conducting. He was encouraged in his love of conducting whilst still at school, and then studied it as part of his undergraduate degree at the University of Wales, Bangor. Whilst at Bangor, he was the director of the University Music Society Choir and Orchestra. He later honed his technique on the Association of British Choral Directors' (ABCD) course for advanced conductors with Neil Ferris, Peter Broadbent and others.

As a church and cathedral musician, Paul has always worked as a conductor and teacher alongside being an organist, working with a variety of singers including cathedral choristers, choral scholars and lay clerks. Outside of the church, he has worked with choirs and musical groups of different sizes and abilities, from chamber choirs to choral societies, male voice choirs and orchestral ensembles. He currently directs a number of groups in the Midlands. Paul often runs "come and sing" events for choirs, usually on specific pieces. Recent repertoire conducted in concerts includes Mendelssohn's Elijah, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, JS Bach's Magnificat in D and Haydn's Nelson Mass, all with orchestra and soloists. Paul conducts repertoire from all time periods, but especially enjoys British music from c.1500-1700, roughly between Taverner and Purcell.

Other activities

Paul has a lively interest in the music and liturgy of the Western church, especially between c.1500-1700. This formed part of the studies required for the Fellowship of the Guild of Church Musicians by examination.

He can sometimes be seen playing the organ or harpsichord as an accompanist or recitalist, and plays keyboards in musical theatre productions, for which he owns his own equipment.

Outside of music, Paul holds the Fellowship of the Burgon Society for research into the academic dress of the University of Bristol.
