Paul Hayward is a Musical Director, Orchestrator and Arranger based in the Midlands. He is an experienced, qualified and versatile musician whose specialisms cover a number of different genres. Paul is the Musical Director for three choirs in the Midlands and is also associated with several other musical groups as a conductor and accompanist. Having been awarded a Master of Music degree in composition, he is studying for a PhD in the same subject at the University of Aberdeen, and his compositions, arrangements and orchestrations have been performed around the UK and further afield.

Background

Paul was fortunate to receive a broad musical education supported by practical experience, and whilst at secondary school became proficient as an accompanist to instrumental and choral groups, as well as playing in jazz, big band, musical theatre and orchestral ensembles. This firm grounding in several genres laid a firm foundation for varied and versatile musical career.

Paul has also been associated with church and cathedral music, holding two assistant cathedral organist positions and a similar post at a public school. Through this, has given recitals at cathedrals, major parish churches and other venues across the UK, and has played for services, concerts, recordings, broadcasts and a royal visit. Having performed daily to the highest standards instilled a professional work ethic, as well as allowing Paul to be a sensitive accompanist, and an imaginative improvisor.

Musical Director

Paul was elected as the Musical Director for both the University of Wales, Bangor Music Society Orchestra and Choir as an undergraduate, kick-starting a career in conducting. As a church/cathedral musician, Paul gained experience teaching and conducting different types of liturgical choirs, from probationer choristers to lay clerks, from amateurs to professionals. In the secular world, Paul has been the MD or assistant MD for a number of choirs of different sizes and abilities, and is currently the MD for the Ruddington and District Choral Society, the Old Dalby Singers (chamber choir), and Coalville Male Voice Choir. Recent concerts have included Paul conducting performances of Mendelssohn's Elijah, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Haydn's Nelson Mass, all with orchestras and soloists, as well as being an assistant MD / accompanist / chorus master for many performances, including Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, Verdi's Requiem and Jenkins' The Armed Man. Paul considers the fact that he conducts three distinctly different musical groups as one of his greatest strengths and sources of inspiration, with rehearsals each week spanning from early vocal music to songs from the shows with virtually everything in between!

Aside from regular duties, Paul is associated with a number of other choirs and musical groups as an accompanist and conductor, and has played a variety of orchestral keyboard instruments for a Nottingham chamber ensemble, from continuo in early music to harmonium/celesta in chamber arrangements of such works as Mussorgsky's Pictures at an exhibition and Mahler's Symphony No.4. Paul is experienced in leading workshops and choral days for choirs, such as days focusing on Faure's Requiem and Mozart's Coronation Mass for the Chesterfield Bach Choir.
Finally, Paul is experienced in musical theatre, and has been the MD, assistant MD, rehearsal pianist and keyboard player for a variety of productions, including Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Les Miserables, Bugsy Malone and Oliver! Paul uses Apple Mainstage with his own equipment and programming. He has a lively interest in musical theatre and
